Notes:

The Stepchild is designed to be relatively simple to assemble and build yourself, but there are a few things to to keep in mind before jumping into the project. The first thing is that even though all the Stepchild components can be easily sourced from scratch, the Stepchild's four PCBs need to fabricated with a manufacturing service. This is why there's a kit! You can of course have them fabricated and assembled yourself, but they're likely cheaper when bought in the kit, which also comes with the full parts list.

A note on ordering the PCBs yourself: Three of the PCBs (the main board, screen board, and step button board) require tight SMD component soldering. Although you can assemble them by hand, I really recommend having these boards populated using a PCBA service! If you're already using a service to fabricate your own PCBs, I recommend paying to have these three boards fully populated with their SMD components.

There is a lot of soldering required to build the Stepchild. Most of the assembly process isn't very difficult, but if you're totally new to soldering, this might not be the best experience. Check out the build video and see if this is a project you'd feel comfortable with.

Things you'll need:

A soldering iron + solder + be safe! Don't solder without good ventilation, and use good safety procedures if you're working with leaded solder.

Small clippers for trimming pins

Foam tape or superglue for mounting the screen & screen protector

If you're printing your own case, the enclosure can be printed on any FDM 3D printer with an 0.2mm nozzle, or an SLA printer, with a build size of at least 180x180mm.
